Using the ROV Utilization Dashboard

Learn how to use the ROV Utilization Dashboard to analyze ROV time allocation across categories, campaigns, and time periods.

Written by John Ennis

Overview

The ROV Utilization Dashboard provides a visual breakdown of how ROV time is spent across your operations. It pulls data from your ROV Utilization Entries and presents it as interactive charts, making it easy to identify trends, compare campaigns, and understand where ROV hours are being allocated.

You can access the dashboard by navigating to IMR → ROV Utilization → Dashboard in the left-hand menu.

Filtering Your View

At the top of the dashboard, two filters let you control which data is displayed:

  • Date Range
Select a predefined range or choose All Time to view the full history of ROV utilization entries. This controls the time window for all charts on the page.

  • Campaign
Filter by a specific campaign (e.g. ROV#5 (2025)) or select All Campaigns to view combined data across every campaign. You can select multiple campaigns to compare utilization side by side.

Click Clear Filters in the top-right corner to reset both filters to their defaults.

ROV Utilization Chart

The main chart on the dashboard visualizes ROV activity over time. It supports two different views — Time Allocation and Productivity — which you can switch between using the dropdown in the top-right corner of the chart.

Time Allocation View

When set to Time Allocation, the chart displays a stacked bar chart showing total ROV hours broken down by category for each time period. Each bar represents a time period, and the colored segments within it show how hours were distributed across the following categories:

  • Subsea Operations – Active subsea work including inspections, interventions, and support tasks.

  • Port – Time spent in port.

  • Transit – Vessel transit time between locations.

  • Standby Support – Time on standby supporting other vessel operations (e.g. FPSO cargo ops, heli standby).

  • Waiting on Weather – Downtime caused by weather conditions.

  • ROV Scheduled Maintenance – Planned maintenance periods for ROV systems.

  • ROV Downtime – Unplanned downtime or equipment failures.

  • Offline (12 Hours Ops) – Offline periods when operating on a 12-hour schedule.

This view is useful for understanding the total volume and composition of ROV time in each period — for example, seeing how much of a given month was spent on subsea operations versus transit or weather delays.

Productivity View

When set to Productivity, the chart switches to a line chart that plots the ROV productivity percentage over time. Productivity represents the proportion of total available ROV hours that were spent on active subsea operations, giving you a single metric to assess operational efficiency.

A higher productivity value indicates that more of the available ROV time was used for subsea work, while a lower value suggests that a larger share of time went to non-operational activities such as transit, standby, weather delays, or downtime.

Use this view to track efficiency trends over time — for example, identifying campaigns or months where productivity dipped due to weather or equipment issues, or confirming that operational improvements are reflected in rising productivity.

Time Grouping

The second dropdown in the top-right corner of the chart controls how data is grouped along the time axis. Options include Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, and Yearly. This setting applies to both the Time Allocation and Productivity views.

Choose a smaller interval (e.g. Daily) for granular analysis of a specific period, or a larger one (e.g. Quarterly) for high-level trend analysis across campaigns.

Allocated Time per Categories

Below the main utilization chart, the Allocated Time per Categories chart shows total hours for each operation category as a simple bar chart. This gives you a quick comparison of where the majority of ROV time is being spent across the selected date range and campaign filters.

Use this chart to quickly identify which categories consume the most hours — for example, whether subsea operations or standby support is the dominant use of ROV time.

Allocated Time per Work Order

The Allocated Time per Work Order chart shows a horizontal bar chart ranking work orders by total allocated hours. This helps you understand which work orders are driving the most ROV activity.

Use the All Work Orders dropdown to filter the chart to a specific work order if needed. Work orders are displayed by their reference number (e.g. #450261581, #300334038).

ROV Operations Table

At the bottom of the dashboard, the ROV Operations table provides a detailed, row-level view of every recorded operation. Each row includes:

  • Date – The date the operation was recorded.

  • Work Order – The associated work order number (if applicable).

  • Category – The operation category (e.g. Subsea Operations, Transit, Standby Support).

  • Description – A brief description of the activity performed.

  • Campaign – The campaign the operation belongs to.

  • Start – End Time – The time window for the operation (if recorded with timestamps).

  • Time – The total duration of the operation.

You can sort any column by clicking its header, and use the Search bar to filter operations by keyword. The table is paginated — use the page controls in the top-right corner to navigate through entries.

Click the download icon in the top-right corner of the table to export the operations data.

Tips for Getting the Most from the Dashboard

  • Compare campaigns by selecting different campaigns in the Campaign filter to see how ROV utilization varies between inspection periods.

  • Spot trends over time by switching to a Monthly or Quarterly view on the main chart to identify seasonal patterns or shifts in how ROV time is allocated.

  • Monitor productivity by switching to the Productivity view to track what percentage of ROV time is being used for active subsea operations versus non-productive activities.

  • Investigate spikes by narrowing the date range and switching to a Daily view to drill into periods with unusually high hours in a specific category.

  • Track non-productive time by reviewing the Waiting on Weather, ROV Downtime, and Standby Support categories in the Time Allocation view to understand how much time is lost to non-operational activities.

  • Ensure data completeness — the dashboard reflects what has been entered in ROV Utilization Entries. If data appears incomplete, confirm that all daily entries and operations have been populated.
